This shows how to set up a midi VST Plugin such as ARP in Sonar X1 by John Cress.
Step 1. Open a new project
Step 2. Insert a Soft Synth. Select ARP
Check MIDISource, First Synth Audio Output and Enable MIDI Output
Synth Track Folder and Synth Property Page are optional.
Just above the middle of the channel strip, set the following:
Set the Channel to match ARP’s setting. (It defaults to 1)
Set the Bank to 0. (The only one available at this time)
Select a Preset. If Program Change is enabled in ARP, it will load this Preset every time you hit Play in Sonar X1
Set Echo to On or Auto-thru as you like.
Near the bottom of the channel strip, set the input to your MIDI controller.
The output must match the channel set in ARP in the general area at the top.
For Hardware Synths:
Step 4. Insert a MIDI Track. On the ProChannel strip, near the bottom, set its input to ARP and again make sure the channel matches the one set in ARP.
Set its output to the Synth you want ARP to control. This channel can be different than ARP’s if need be. Set Bank and Preset as you normally would.
Set Echo to ON, not Auto-thru. Otherwise ARP’s MIDI output won’t go to your synth.
Step 5. Insert an Audio Track. Go to the Track Strip and set the input to the synth you’re using. Set Output as you normally would.
For Soft Synths:
Step 4: Insert soft synth as usual. Set its MIDI input to ARP and match the channel to ARP’s.
Special thanks to John Cress for this!
